What are Social Determinants of Health? You may not know that many things in your daily life can affect your health—from the air you breathe to thingslike transportation, money issues, access to food, and housing.Health experts call these nonmedical factors “Social Determinants of Health”. And they can play a key role inyour risk for diseases and other health problems. For example, if you live in a neighborhood with few grocery stores, you may be less likely to eat fresh fruits andvegetables. So you may be more at risk for conditions like heart disease and diabetes in the future.Anything that affects your comfort, safety, and well-being is also a social determinant of health. Some commonones are: Problems with housing; A lack of food; Transportation needs; Money concerns; Child care needs;Medical care and insurance problems; A lack of space for exercise; Or urgent needs like feeling unsafe whereyou live or work.If you’re having problems like these, talk with your healthcare provider.
